Glossary of Greek Terminology

Active  A fully initiated member of a fraternity, sorority or society.

Alumni Initiated members of a fraternity, sorority or society no longer enrolled as undergraduate students.

Bid A formal invitation to a particular fraternity, sorority or society.

Big Brother/ Big Sister/ Big Sibling An active member who serves as a mentor to a New Member during their New Member Program.

Brother An initiated member of a fraternity or society.

Chapter  The local collegiate membership of a national fraternity, sorority or society.

Continuous Open Bidding (COB) An informal recruitment process that takes place after the conclusion of Formal Panhellenic Recruitment.

Colony/Affiliate  The status of a new Greek organization prior to receiving its national charter.

Formal Panhellenic Recruitment A series of events given by each sorority that is designed to introduce sorority life to potential new members. Formal Panhellenic Recruitment is scheduled by the Panhellenic Council.

Fraternity A Greek organization for men or women.

Initiation  The formal ceremony that marks the beginning of active membership. Each chapter has a different set of requirements in order to be initiated.

Interfraternity Council (IFC) The governing body of nine recognized fraternities and one society at UNH.

Legacy  A prospective member who has a family member in the same fraternity, sorority or society.

National Panhellenic Council (NCP)  The National Panhellenic Conference is the umbrella organization for 26 national and international women’s fraternities and sororities.  Five NCP chapters are present at UNH.

New Member An individual who has accepted a bid and is engaged in preparing for initiation.

Panhellenic  A Greek word meaning “All-Greek,” it is a governing council for five sororities at UNH; it is the collegiate counterpart of NCP.

Philanthropy  An organization’s activity that directly benefits a charitable organization by donating funds, completing volunteer hours, and/or promoting awareness of the organization.

Potential New Member A person going through the recruitment process for Greek membership.

Ritual An activity which bonds the organization together and is traditionally secretive.

Recruitment  An active process utilized by the Greek organizations to engage potential new members. General recruitment activities are non-binding and offer both active members in the organizations and interested students the opportunity to learn more about each other.

Recruit A person interested in becoming a member of a fraternity, sorority or society.

Recruitment Counselor (Rho Psi)  A disaffiliated member of a NCP organization who assists potential new members through the recruitment process.

Sister  An initiated member of a sorority.

Sorority A Greek organization for women.

United Greek Association The governing council for Greek organizations not affiliated with IFC or the Panhellenic Council.
