Frequently Asked Questions

Greek Life

What chapters are recognized at UNH?
There are seven recognized sororities and eleven recognized fraternities.
Sororities: Alpha Xi Delta, Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Phi, Delta Xi Phi, Kappa Delta, Sigma Alpha, Chi Omega, Phi Sigma Sigma
Fraternities: Alpha Gamma Rho, Lambda Chi Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Nu, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Chi, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Phi Mu Delta, and Theta Chi
What are the benefits to joining a recognized chapter?
The benefits of being a member of the Greek community are endless. The Greek community offers leadership opportunities, character development, lifelong friendships, academic support and community and campus involvement to name a few. Belonging to an unrecognized group will not give you such opportunities, and many of the resources which would be available to you, aren’t.
How and when can I join a fraternity or sorority at UNH?
The formal recruitment process takes place every fall semester but every house is open to new member intake 365 days a year. Please register for sorority recruitment here
What is hazing?
Hazing is officially defined as any activity expected of someone joining a group (or to maintain full status in a group) that humiliates, degrades or risks emotional and/or physical harm, regardless of the person's willingness to participate
What’s the policy on hazing?
UNH and the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life enforce a strict No Hazing Policy. If you or someone you know has been hazed or you’ve witnessed an act of hazing, please call the Hazing Hotline at (603) 862-3686
How much does joining a fraternity/sorority cost?
Every chapter has different membership dues and requirements. Regardless of the bargain that some may feel they get from being Greek, it does cost money. Every chapter is designed to accommodate their members so that they can afford the experience. In this case, payment plans and even scholarships are given in assistance.
How will joining affect my GPA?
Although Fraternity & Sorority Life may seem like a major time commitment, academics always come first. Every chapter has minimum GPA requirements as does the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life. Further, academic support is always being offered at UNH. Tutoring programs, study sessions and educational support workshops are always available to help you reach your goals.
